One of our class projects this semester involved creating a ukulele curricula for our Engagement Project Placement. My colleagues (Doug Ritcher and Christina Fiol) and I were part of the group working with the Gemeinschaft Songwriting Project, so we came together to create this ukulele experience that would benefit the residents we had been working with. We used the VA Standards of Music to create attainable goals and built lesson plans and finally assessments around those ideas. I learned throughout this process that context is extremely important. Yes, students can learn strumming patterns, but how can they demonstrate that? Asking "how" and "why" questions while writing assessments is very helpful. Because our Engagement Project placement is such a unique group to work with, we constantly had to make sure our plans were learner-centered, not just goal-centered. We did this through our song choices and goal selection, heavily emphasizing the residents' connections with the music. Here is a link to the Google Doc; please feel free to comment!
